The objective of this study was to analyze incubation of eggs and survival of silver catfish
(Rhamdia quelen) larvae after 21 days in soft water with different concentrations of calcium and magnesium. Eggs were incubated in continuously aerated 4 L polyethylene bottles (600 eggs/bottle) at 24 o C. Eggs were randomly divided in 5 treatments (three replicates) with different concentrations of Ca ++ and Mg ++ (mg/L): control group (hardness of 20 mg/L CaCO3) -5.2 Ca ++ and 0.95 Mg ++ ; experimental groups (hardness of 70 mg/L CaCO3) - 5.2 Ca ++ and 14.12 Mg ++ ; 13.11 Ca ++ and 7.11 Mg ++ ; 20.26 Ca ++ and 2.89 Mg ++ ; 24.95 Ca ++ and 0.95 Mg ++ , obtained with addition of CaCl2
and/or MgCl2. The post hatch larvae were transferred to continuously aerated 40 L polyethylene tanks (356-478 larvae/tank) using a water re-use system. The increase of water hardness to 70 mg/L CaCO3 (all treatments) increased hatchery rate. The highest Ca ++ level reduced post hatch survival. However, final larvae survival decreased in the treatments with highest Mg ++ levels (14.2 and 7.11 mg/L). These results suggest that the increase of water hardness to 70 mg/L CaCO3 using either Ca ++ or Mg ++ improved hatchery rate, but higher Mg ++ concentrations reduced larvae survival.
